A Covert Channel Using Named Resources
A network covert channel is created that uses resource names such as
addresses to convey information, and that approximates typical user behavior in
order to blend in with its environment. The channel correlates available
resource names with a user defined code-space, and transmits its covert message
by selectively accessing resources associated with the message codes. In this
paper we focus on an implementation of the channel using the Hypertext Transfer
Protocol (HTTP) with Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) as the message names,
though the system can be used in conjunction with a variety of protocols. The
covert channel does not modify expected protocol structure as might be detected
by simple inspection, and our HTTP implementation emulates transaction level
web user behavior in order to avoid detection by statistical or behavioral
analysis.Comment: 9 page
An experiment in remote manufacturing using the advanced communications technology satellite
The goal of the completed project was to develop an experiment in remote manufacturing that would use the capabilities of the ACTS satellite. A set of possible experiments that could be performed using the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS), and which would perform remote manufacturing using a laser cutter and an integrated circuit testing machine are described in detail. The proposed design is shown to be a feasible solution to the offered problem and it takes into consideration the constraints that were placed on the experiment. In addition, we have developed two more experiments that are included in this report: backup of rural telecommunication networks, and remote use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data analysis for on-site collection of glacier scattering data in the Antarctic
Treatment Of Psoriasis With Oral Mycophenolic Acid
Mycophenolic acid (MPA), an inhibitor of purine synthesis, was evaluated for its therapeutic and adverse effects in 29 patients with psoriasis. MPA was administered orally for at least 12 weeks, during which time the daily dose was increased from 1600 to 4800mg depending on occurrence of adverse reactions. Complete clearing occurred in 1 of the patients, almost complete clearing in 14, definite improvement in 13, slight or doubtful improvement in 1. The full effect of MPA required a median time of 8 weeks (range 5–14). After discontinuing MPA, relapses began at a median time of 4 weeks (range 3–8). The severity of psoriasis was scored on a 0 to 108 scale using a newly devised system. The mean severity and range beibre treatment was 47 (21–88); after 12 weeks, 15 (0–50). Adjustment of dose on the basis of side effects resulted in a median daily dose of 3600mg (range 2400–4800mg; 30–96mg/kg ideal weight). Characteristic dose-limiting side effects were soft or frequent bowel movements, diarrhea, nausea, and anorexia. One instance of reversible, dose-related leukopenia was identified

The increase in the size of networks is accompanied by the more demanding use of networks by distributed applications that critically rely on the system to function well. Consequently, monitoring the health and stability of networks has become crucial. Tools and probes to measure the performance of networks for the purpose of management, fault diagnosis, or performance evaluation have been developed by several research groups. There is not yet, however, a measurement infrastructure which offers systematic control and management of measurement efforts and performance data focused on supporting distributed network-aware applications. This work addresses the implementation of a scalable and extensible network measurement infrastructure used to capture network state to improve the performance of a distributed application
